Child-resistant packaging is necessary for cannabis products, but that does not mean adults should struggle every time they open the package. A package can pass child-resistant testing and still create a poor experience if the opening point is unclear, the button is too small, or the structure requires more force than expected.
For cannabis brands, the goal should be straightforward: prevent young children from accessing the product while allowing adults to open and close the package correctly. Achieving that balance depends on more than choosing a certified structure. Materials, production tolerances, product filling and opening instructions all affect how the finished packaging performs.
Most opening problems are not caused by one single issue. They usually come from several small design and production details working against the user.
Common problems include:
The press point is too small or difficult to locate.
The opening instruction is hidden by graphics or printed in very small text.
The drawer, lid or zipper requires too much force.
The product inside presses against the packaging and blocks the opening mechanism.
The package works when empty but becomes difficult to open after filling.
Production tolerances make some units tighter than the approved sample.
These details matter because consumers do not see the technical drawings or testing process. They only see a package that either opens as expected or does not. When the opening method is not intuitive, users may damage the box, cut the bag with scissors or leave the package partly open after use.
Child-resistant packaging is designed to create a deliberate opening process. It may require two actions at the same time, such as pressing and sliding, squeezing and pulling, or pushing down while turning.
However, making the lock tighter is not always the right solution. Excessive resistance can make the package difficult for older adults, people with limited hand strength and first-time users. It may also place unnecessary pressure on paper components, hinges, plastic buttons and zipper seals.
A better approach is to start with a proven child-resistant packaging structure and then refine the user experience around it. The mechanism should remain secure, but the correct opening action should be easy for an adult to understand.
Press-and-slide tins are commonly used for pre-rolls, mints, gummies and other compact cannabis products. The user normally presses specific points on the outer sleeve while sliding the inner tray forward.
This mechanism can be easy to use when the press points are clearly marked and the sliding resistance is properly controlled. Problems appear when the outer shell is too tight, the inner tray is overloaded or the press areas are hidden by the artwork.
When developing child-resistant tin packaging , the filled product size should be confirmed before the internal layout is finalized. A pre-roll, blister tray or paper insert that is slightly too high can create friction and make the drawer harder to slide.
Hinged tins usually use a front or side release point. They provide a familiar opening direction and work well for products that need to remain organized inside the container.
The main factors are button size, hinge movement and lid alignment. If the lock is too stiff, the consumer may press in the wrong place. If it is too loose, the package may not close consistently. The lid and base therefore need to be checked together rather than treated as separate components.
Paper CR boxes may use side buttons, rear press points or locking tabs to control the movement of an inner tray. They are widely used for vape cartridges, disposable devices, pre-rolls and edible products.
Paper thickness is important, but thicker material does not automatically produce a better package. The locking area needs enough strength to remain functional after repeated use, while the tray still needs to move smoothly. Die-cut accuracy, lamination and assembly consistency can all affect the finished opening force.
CR mylar bags often use a concealed or offset zipper that requires a specific hand position. They are lightweight and practical, but the opening method may not be obvious from the front of the bag.
A small opening diagram can make a noticeable difference. Brands should also leave enough space above the zipper so the consumer can grip the bag without covering the opening area.
The release point should not disappear inside a complicated graphic. A small arrow, short instruction or subtle contrast can guide adults without changing the overall package design.
Instructions such as “Press Both Sides and Slide” are usually more helpful than a long paragraph. When the mechanism is less familiar, a simple two-step illustration can be added to the side or back panel.

Small buttons may look cleaner, but they are harder to locate and press. The release area should provide enough contact for an adult finger without making the lock visually dominant.
An empty packaging sample does not show the full picture. Pre-roll diameter, pouch thickness, blister height and product weight can all change how the package opens.
Before mass production, the brand should place the actual product or an accurate dummy sample inside the package. This helps confirm the internal space, closing pressure and opening movement.
One perfect sample does not represent an entire production run. Several samples should be opened and closed repeatedly to check whether the resistance remains consistent.
For sliding packaging, pay attention to tray movement and side-button alignment. For hinged tins, check the lock and hinge after repeated opening. For mylar bags, confirm that the zipper can be fully closed again after use.
Artwork is often approved before the opening instruction is fully considered. This can leave no suitable area for arrows, instructions or required warnings.
The structural dieline and the graphic design should therefore be reviewed together. A small adjustment during the artwork stage is much easier than changing the mechanism after production has started.
Before approving a custom CR package, test it in the same way a consumer will use it:
Can a first-time user identify the opening point without help?
Does the package still open smoothly after the product is inserted?
Can it be properly closed again after each use?
Does the mechanism remain consistent after repeated opening?
Are the instructions readable at the final printed size?
Does the package remain aligned after shipping and handling?
It is also useful to ask several adults to try the sample without explaining the opening method first. If most people press the wrong area or turn the package in the wrong direction, the instruction or structure may need improvement.
Good cannabis packaging should not force a choice between child resistance and usability. The mechanism must remain secure, but adults should be able to understand and operate it without unnecessary frustration.
The best results usually come from reviewing the complete package: the CR structure, actual product dimensions, internal insert, artwork, opening instructions and production tolerances. When these elements are developed together, the package is more likely to perform consistently from sampling through mass production.
